Tropical Storm Chris

at200512

Our third tropical storm of the season formed late Monday, and is now classified as a minimal tropical storm. August is usually when hurricane season really starts to heat up. Generally June and July are quiet with most systems confined to the immediate Gulf and East coasts. Nearly 90% of all systems develop after August 1. We also start looking farther out into the Atlantic for development. When a tropical storm forms near the Windward Islands they usually take one of three tracks. A northerly track taking it over the central Atlantic not bothering anyone...that's my favorite track. A WNW track puts it over the Bahamas and could move toward the East coast or squeeze between Florida and Cuba into the Gulf of Mexico, and the third moves it west over the Caribbean...the third case scares me the most because these tend to turn Northwest near the Yucatan and these are usually bad news for us along the northern Gulf coast. This one appears to be taking track #2 toward the Bahamas, will it move over Florida late this weekend and into the Gulf? Still too early to tell, but I assure you everyone around here is talking about it. Don't be suprised to see Debby form this weekend or next week, but that one may stay over the Atlantic. Remember the links on the right side of the blog, and if we have to move out of the way all the info will be posted here. Stay tuned.
